The Red Cell Interrogator Nikita believes she killed two years earlier kidnaps and replaced Nikita with a genetically engineered doppelganger to spy inside Section One. If Nikita does not guide her double through every aspect of her life, Michael will be killed. Nikita manages to drop enough clues for Section to discover the deception, but those clues include allowing her double to sleep with Birkoff and Michael before the deception is discovered.
